2 hr CPE: Regulatory Ethics (Technical): Regulatory Oversight

Synopsis: We plan to cover the priorities and responsibilities of the FBI with a focus on complex financial crimes. We will specifically discuss the duties of the Forensic Accountant and how the position and our work impact investigations across all programs in the FBI. We will provide two case presentations to further highlight the Forensic Accountants contributions to the investigative team.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Gain a basic understanding of the investigative priorities and responsibilities of the FBI.
  2. Understand the duties, responsibilities and value the FBI Forensic Accountant adds to the investigative team
  3. Provide case examples detailing how Forensic Accountants calculate/mitigate loss

Bios of Speakers

Kathryn McDonald, CPA, CFE – Kathryn McDonald is the Supervisory Forensic Accountant at the FBI’s Phoenix Division and has been with the Bureau for 12 years. Prior to joining the FBI, she was an audit manager for a regional public accounting firm. She possesses a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting and Master of Accountancy, both from the University of New Mexico, and holds both the CPA and CFE designations. She has worked many different violations, including Securities, Healthcare, Public Corruption, Terrorism, Drugs, Gangs, Human Trafficking, Espionage and Fraud Against the Government.

 

Dawson Anglin, CPA, CFE – Dawson Anglin is a Forensic Accountant at the FBI’s Phoenix Division and has been with the Bureau for 13 years. Prior to joining the FBI, Dawson worked as an Assistant Controller of a real estate management company and worked for a Forensic Accounting firm that handled insurance disputes. Dawson worked as an Auditor with the FBI before transitioning to the Forensic Accountant role. Dawson possesses a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting and Master of Accountancy, both from Arizona State University, and holds both the CPA and CFE designations. He has worked many different violations, including Healthcare, Public Corruption, Terrorism, Drugs, Gangs, Espionage, International Money Laundering, Bank Fraud and Sanctions Evasion. Dawson is also part of the Evidence Response Team.

 

Lance Giles, CPA, CIA - Lance started as a Forensic Accountant for the Phoenix Division in 2020 and currently investigates public corruption, white collar crimes, and drug trafficking operations. Lance loves analyzing financial data in Excel and Power BI and is part of the Forensic Accountant Unit’s Tech Team. Lance is a CPA, CIA, and is working on obtaining his CFE designation. Lance has an undergraduate degree from Utah State University and a graduate degree from The University of Texas, Dallas. Prior to the FBI, Lance audited U.S. Department of Defense contracts for the Defense Contract Audit Agency. In his spare time, Lance swims, coaches soccer, runs trail, and teaches Accounting at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix.
